Jeff Francis and other options
Cincinnati Reds are not done shopping this offseason. Walt Jocketty has told reporters that he is looking to trade for a SS / INF and they are looking into trying to get LHP Jeff Francis to add some more depth. [Source – Mark Sheldon]
I read that the Reds are looking to maybe getting Francis signed to a minor league deal which in my mind would be great, but there are a few other teams looking into trying to sign him so I am not sure if a deal will get done. Jeff Francis would be better off coming back to the National League though since he did not have to good of a season for Kansas City Royals in 2011. There are some people who think Francis would not be a good option because of Great American Ball Park but if they do sign him to a minor league deal I really don’t see it as being a big issue since it will give the team more options. It would be another low risk high returns kind of deal which has been paying off for Walt Jocketty this offseason so far.
There have been a few people interested in the SS / INF trade talk and I have to be very honest, I am just as stumped as you are to who they will go after and who they will give up to get a backup utility infielder. I have some guesses but so far I have been way off when trying to guess what Walt will do. I thought maybe Carlos Fisher or Jose Arredondo would be traded for what they need but like I said before, I have not been too good at guessing this offseason.
2011 Reds pitching SIERA
Today, I wanted to discuss Cincinnati Reds SIERA (Skill-Interactive ERA) numbers for 2011, using the pitchers on the roster now. “The league-average for starting pitchers is a 3.81 SIERA; the league-average for relievers is a 3.40 SIERA.” Zack Greinke had a 2.66 SIERA followed by Cliff Lee 2.72 SIERA and Roy Halladay 2.79 SIERA. Jonathan Papelbon had a 1.58 SIERA in 2011. I got all of the SIERA stats from my updated Reds pitchers list on fangraphs.com.
Cincinnati Reds pitchers SIERA 2011
Name SIERA Cueto 3.93 Latos 3.48 Arroyo 4.57 Bailey 3.78 Leake 3.76 Chapman 3.65 Madson 2.63 Marshall 2.20 Masset 3.58 Ondrusek 4.27 Bray 3.45 LeCure 3.01 Arredondo 4.12 Fisher 4.32 Judy 4.62 Brackman 8.69
Of course when trying to determine how good a pitcher really is, it is best to use many different stats in order to better judge each pitcher. SIERA is just one way to judge a pitcher and how well he has done. For more information about SIERA please go and read all the great posts on fangraphs.com
It is always nice to have options
Out Of Options: “The following players on the Reds’ 40-man roster do not have options: RHP Jose Arredondo, RHP Bronson Arroyo, RHP Homer Bailey, LHP Bill Bray, IF Miguel Cairo, RHP Carlos Fisher, IF Juan Francisco, RHP Nick Masset and 2B Brandon Phillips.” [Source]
That makes 9 players out of 38 on the 40-man roster. Jose Arredondo, Homer Bailey, Carlos Fisher and Juan Francisco are the ones that concern me the most. Will they be able to step up their game and play to their potential the whole season? And stay healthy at the same time. I am looking forward to watching Juan Francisco play in 2012 and I really hope these three pitchers can stay off the DL and play great for the Reds.
Another question that comes to mind right now is; will these three pitchers be included in another trade before spring training? The Reds are still looking for an outfielder and a SS/INF and most people think they will look at free agents for that help. I still think Walt Jocketty will make another trade and these three pitchers might be a part of it. There have been some rumors about Homer Bailey being traded already but only by fans, I am not sure if reporters have asked Walt Jocketty if he would trade away these three pitchers this offseason.
Happy New Year
I would like to wish you all a very Happy New Year! I hope 2012 brings everyone nothing but great health and happiness and of course another World Series Championship to the Cincinnati Reds.

2012 Predictions
Steve Engbloom from Blog Red Machine has posted some very interesting posts lately regarding Cincinnati Reds starting pitchers in 2012. So far he has talked about Bronson Arroyo, Mat Latos and Johnny Cueto. If you have time, I highly recommend you read them.
The posts were brought on by predictions made by Bill James on FanGraphs. He predicted how the Reds pitchers will do in 2012. Predictions that are a little scary to look at. I thought I would share them and see what everyone else thought. [Source] More information on Bill James predictions.
Johnny Cueto 11-11
Mat Latos 15-9
Bronson Arroyo 11-12
Homer Bailey 9-10
Mike Leake 9-10
Aroldis Chapman 3-3
Sean Marshall 5-4
Bill Bray 3-2
Nick Masset 3-4
Logan Ondrusek 3-2
Sam LeCure 4-5
Jose Arredondo 4-3
Carlos Fisher N/A
Josh Judy N/A
If these predictions are close that would mean the team would roughly be a .500 ball club in 2012. Of course these predictions were made before Sean Marshall and Mat Latos joined the team but since the Reds have not really touched their position players except losing Ramon Hernandez and Edgar Renteria it makes me wonder if the two new pitchers will make much of a difference. A lot of people think that Mat Latos and Sean Marshall will make a huge difference to the team, while others think the Reds still need a lot more in order to make the playoffs.
Here are my 2012 predictions: (Remember now, I am no Bill James. I am just a crazy fan who loves the Reds!)
Johnny Cueto 12-9
Mat Latos 19-7
Bronson Arroyo 15-10
Homer Bailey 7-9
Mike Leake 11-8
Aroldis Chapman 9-7
Sean Marshall 5-2
Bill Bray 4-2
Nick Masset 3-3
Logan Ondrusek 1-1
Sam LeCure 7-5
Jose Arredondo 4-4
Carlos Fisher 0-1
Josh Judy 1-1
Carlos Beltran vs. Reds pitching
I thought it would be nice to compare Carlos Beltran vs. Cincinnati Reds pitching. Johnny Cueto and Mat Latos might have the most problems against him in 2012 if he stays healthy. Even with seeing some of these numbers I am still happy it is him instead of Albert Pujols.

Six arbitration-eligible players and Andrew Brackman
The Reds have tendered contracts to shortstop Paul Janish and pitchers Bill Bray, Edinson Volquez, Nick Masset, Homer Bailey and Jose Arredondo, all six are arbitration-eligible players.
Paul Janish might not have the bat that Reds fans would like to see but I really can’t see any other free agents out there that would be able to field as good as him at SS and if Zack Cozart does not work out like expected the Reds will need Janish big time.
Bill Bray and Nick Masset are going to be very important players in 2012 for the Cincinnati Reds with Francisco Cordero leaving to free agency. Homer Bailey should do well as a starter in 2012 if he can stay healthy and Edinson Volquez might become the Reds closer.
The Reds have also signed 26-year-old Andrew Brackman (born in Cincinnati) who played 3 games for New York Yankees in 2011. He was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 1st round (30th pick) of the 2007 amateur draft. I am not sure if he is ready to be a starter in the big leagues yet but it is a good signing for the Reds. It shows that they are doing something at least.
What Cincinnati Reds pitcher had the best fastball in 2011
When it came to Reds pitching in 2011 there were a lot of hits and misses. I wanted to see how well the pitchers did with their fastball. Now many will say that stats will never help a person determine who’s fastball is the best but FanGraphs has done a pretty good job to give you a rough idea.
Johnny Cueto had the best fastball with 13.3 wFB and 1.00 wFB/C. Logan Ondrusek had a 5.7 wFB with 1.65 wFB/C. Aroldis Chapman had 5.1 wFB and a 0.69 wFB/C. Bill Bray also did well with his fastball in 2011 with a 4.4 wFB and 1.08 wFB/C. Sam LeCure did pretty good with his fastball to with a 2.5 wFB and 0.33 wFB/C. Mike Leake was the only other pitcher throwing a good fastball in 2011 with 1.7 wFB and 0.19 wFB/C. Jose Arredondo, Jeremy Horst and Carlos Fisher were the only other pitchers with + ranked fastballs for the Reds. (All under 1.0)
Bronson Arroyo had the worst with -24.3 wFB and -1.71 wFB/C while Edinson Volquez came close with a -23.4 wFB and -2.42 wFB/C. Homer Bailey got the third worst fastball with -11.2 wFB and -0.94 wFB/C.
