Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips and Bench Coach Chris Speier and I share the same birthday, June 28. So I am always watching to make sure they stay on my favorite team. Brandon Phillips is in talks with the Reds to try to sign an extension and Chris Speier is a great bench coach who I feel could one day become the manager.
Brandon Phillips was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 2nd round of the 1999 amateur draft and Chris Speier was drafted by San Francisco Giants in the 1st round (2nd pick) of the 1970 draft.
Brandon Phillips has played 1017 games at 2B with a career .987 Fld% and 656 double plays and a 4.99 RF/9. Chris Speier played 1900 games at SS with a .970 Fld% and 1043 double plays and a 5.02 RF/9. Another interesting thing about Speier is he is ranked 24th overall with most career defensive games as SS with 1900.
Phillips debuted on September 13, 2002 at Jacobs Field playing for Cleveland Indians. He went 0 for 1 with a strike out. Tony Fiore threw 5 pitches to Brandon in the bottom of the 7th. (1st a called strike, 2nd, 3rd and 4th were foul balls and the 5th was a swinging strike.)
Speier debuted on April 7, 1971 at San Diego Stadium playing for San Francisco Giants. He went 2 for 4 with 1 walk, 2 RBIs and 1 run. Other players in the batting order that day for the Giants were; Bobby Bonds, (1st) Willie Mays (3rd) and Willie McCovey. (4th) Chris Speier batted 2nd.
Both of these guys are people I look up to as a fan and I hope that they have great careers with the Reds for many years. Watching them both win a World Series ring in 2012 would be a late but great birthday gift for all of us.
