Simon keeps showing starter stuff in eight strong

Greinke strong after early stumble, but bats quiet
Zack Greinke settled down after giving up a two-run homer in the first inning, but sufficient damage had already been done. The right-hander gave up just those two runs over six innings, but took the loss as the Dodgers were shut down by Cincinnati starter Alfredo Simon in a 4-1 defeat at Great American Ball Park on Thursday. #Reds Simon vs #Dodgers Greinke 06.12.2014

Alfredo Simon faces Zack Greinke in duel of eight-game winners
Eight-game winners Alfredo Simon and Zack Greinke face off as the Reds face the Dodgers in the series finale on Thursday afternoon at Great American Ball Park.

Dodgers vs Reds

Alfredo Simon 31 | P
8 – 3 ERA 3.15
0 – 1 ERA 9.00 (Career vs LAD)
Simon allowed three runs on seven hits over six innings to beat the Phillies on Saturday. He is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA (6 ER in 6 IP) in three career appearances (one start) against the Dodgers.

Zack Greinke 21 | P
8 – 2 ERA 2.62
5 – 1 ERA 2.73 (Career vs CIN)
Probably should throw out the last start, an 11-hitter over seven innings, because it came at Coors Field, where Greinke deploys a damage-control strategy. All things considered, he’s been the club’s best starter this year.

2011 Reds pitching SIERA

Today, I wanted to discuss Cincinnati Reds SIERA (Skill-Interactive ERA) numbers for 2011, using the pitchers on the roster now. “The league-average for starting pitchers is a 3.81 SIERA; the league-average for relievers is a 3.40 SIERA.” Zack Greinke had a 2.66 SIERA followed by Cliff Lee 2.72 SIERA and Roy Halladay 2.79 SIERA. Jonathan Papelbon had a 1.58 SIERA in 2011. I got all of the SIERA stats from my updated Reds pitchers list on fangraphs.com.

Cincinnati Reds pitchers SIERA 2011

Name SIERA
Cueto 3.93
Latos 3.48
Arroyo 4.57
Bailey 3.78
Leake 3.76
Chapman 3.65

Madson 2.63
Marshall 2.20
Masset 3.58
Ondrusek 4.27
Bray 3.45
LeCure 3.01
Arredondo 4.12
Fisher 4.32
Judy 4.62
Brackman 8.69

Of course when trying to determine how good a pitcher really is, it is best to use many different stats in order to better judge each pitcher. SIERA is just one way to judge a pitcher and how well he has done. For more information about SIERA please go and read all the great posts on fangraphs.com

If only the front office could see into the future

When I look over this list it makes me wonder what if the Cincinnati Reds front office could have seen into the future. Would they have picked differently? One thing to note is that Joey Votto was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2nd round of the 2002 amateur draft.
